Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about smart locks in alternative living spaces.
🔌 Power & Battery
How long do smart lock batteries last?
Bluetooth locks: 6-12 months. WiFi locks: 3-6 months. Cold weather can reduce life by 30-50%. Use our Battery Life Calculator for precise estimates.
Can I power my lock from my RV's 12V system?
Yes. Use a buck converter (12V→5V) for 5V locks. Include inline fuse (1A) within 12" of source. See our 12V wiring guide.
What's the best battery for cold weather?
Lithium AA batteries (not rechargeable). They work down to -40°F. LiFePO4 backup batteries also handle cold well but need warming below 0°F.
How much solar do I need for a smart lock?
5W panel for Bluetooth locks, 10W for WiFi in most locations. Size for winter sun hours. Use our Energy Calculator to size your system.
🚪 Installation & Compatibility
Will a smart lock fit my tiny house door?
Most tiny house doors are 1-3/8" thick. Look for retrofit locks (August, Level) or models with adjustable backsets. Use our Compatibility Checker to verify.
Do I need to reinforce my van door?
Yes. Van doors flex and can damage smart locks. Add reinforcement plates and strengthen the strike plate. See our reinforcement guide.
Can I install a smart lock myself?
Most retrofit locks are DIY-friendly. Full replacements may need professional help. Budget 1-3 hours for first installation. Use our Installation Cost Calculator.
What if I lose power while locked out?
Always keep physical keys. Most locks have 9V jump terminals for emergency power. Consider backup battery systems for off-grid setups.
📱 Connectivity & Features
Do I need WiFi for a smart lock to work?
No. Bluetooth locks work locally without WiFi. WiFi is only needed for remote access and notifications. All smart locks have physical key overrides.
What's the range of Bluetooth locks?
Typically 30-100 feet depending on obstacles. Metal van walls reduce range. WiFi extenders can improve connectivity in larger spaces.
Can I give temporary access to guests?
Yes. Most locks support time-limited codes, single-use codes, or scheduled access. Create codes before guests arrive for smoother check-ins.
Are smart locks secure?
Yes. They use encryption (AES-128/256). Physical security matters more - reinforce doors and use quality locks. Security is layers, not just the lock.
🔧 Troubleshooting
My lock won't respond. What should I check?
1) Replace batteries 2) Check for obstructions in bolt path 3) Verify strike alignment 4) Restart the app 5) Check if auto-lock is enabled and timing out
The bolt sticks when locking/unlocking.
Strike plate misalignment is most common. Adjust strike position or reinforce door frame. Lubricate with dry graphite, not oil-based lubricants.
Battery drains quickly in winter.
Normal in cold weather. Use lithium batteries, reduce WiFi usage, add insulation around lock, or provide external power. Expect 30-50% less battery life.
App can't find the lock.
Ensure Bluetooth is on, you're within range, and the lock has power. Reset Bluetooth on your phone. Restart the lock by removing batteries for 30 seconds.
