Cold-Start Behavior in Vans: Battery Warming & Sticky Seals
Lithium hates the cold. Rubber hates it more. Locks feel both.
1) Battery Reality
- Below 0 °C, Li-ion chemistry slows → actuation delay × 2 or more.
- Add a 5 W heat pad with thermostat under lock battery pack; trigger > 0 °C.
- Insulate battery cavity with closed-cell foam; leave vent gap for moisture.
2) Grease Selection
- Use silicone-based or PTFE low-temp grease on bolts, not petroleum.
- Wipe off summer lithium grease; it stiffens below −10 °C.
3) Seal Management
- Clean door gaskets; apply silicone rubber conditioner monthly in winter.
- If frozen shut: push (compress) first, then pull — breaks ice bond without tearing.
4) Pre-Warm Routine
- Remote unlock? Run cabin heater 5 min before approach.
- No remote? Carry a hand-warmer pouch near keypad 2–3 min before entry.
5) Off-Season Storage
- Charge lock batteries to ~ 50 %, store indoors if detached.
- Label date + temp log on storage bag for next season.
Design for January, and every other month will feel luxurious.
