Vibration & Rattle-Proofing for Vanlife Cargo Doors
Road buzz + thin sheet metal = the fastest way to murder a smart lock.
1) Damping Stack
- Closed-cell neoprene gasket behind escutcheon (1–2 mm) to decouple vibration.
- Butyl pads on inner door skin near latch pocket to kill panel ring.
- Felt tape on contact points that "tick" during bumps.
2) Shim & Strike Geometry
- Set strike depth for zero bind with both loaded and unloaded van weight.
- Use stainless shims to fine-tune latch engagement; no side-load on the bolt.
3) Fastener Discipline
- Blue threadlocker on all machine screws; paint-mark heads for drift detection.
- Use nyloc nuts or prevailing-torque fasteners where accessible.
4) Cable & Harness Anti-Chafe
- Edge grommets + braided sleeve; secure every 15–20 cm.
- Service loop with strain relief near moving points.
5) Real-Road Validation
- Ten lock/unlock cycles parked.
- Drive: speed bumps, cobbles, railroad crossing.
- Repeat ten cycles. If tone changes or hesitation appears → recheck strike & screws.
Silence is a metric. Build until it's quiet and it'll stay reliable.
