Door Materials & Mounting That Lasts
The lock is smart. The door just has to survive weather and torque.
1) Wood Doors
- Pre-drill and seal all holes with varnish or thin epoxy to stop moisture wicking.
- Use stainless hardware (#304 or #316) — no zinc plated stuff outside.
- Add nylon spacers if panel thickness > 2 in to avoid latch bind.
2) Steel Doors
- Apply rubber gasket between metal and lock plate to isolate galvanic coupling.
- Use anti-corrosion primer around cutouts; edge paint after drilling.
- Ensure electrical bonding if part of lightning network (see Post 5).
3) Fiberglass & Composite
- Requires backing block inside core — don't rely on foam alone.
- Drill slowly to avoid delamination; use step bit and tape surface.
4) Thermal Bridge Check
Keep metal lock interior side from direct contact with outside metal to avoid condensation. Tiny silicone washers work wonders.
Smart locks die from leaks and strain, not from AI malice. Mount like a pro.
