Weather Sealing for Smart Locks: Gaskets, Glands & Vents
Water is patient. You must be sneakier.
1) Door Interface
- Use a closed-cell EPDM gasket behind lock escutcheons.
- Avoid open-cell foam — it drinks humidity.
- Compress evenly; no warped mounting plates.
2) Cable Glands
- Pick IP67 rated nylon or metal glands with rubber inserts.
- Tighten until insert just bulges — not screams.
3) Drain & Vent
- Add a GORE-type membrane vent on battery or controller boxes.
- Drip loop every exterior cable run.
4) Sealants & Finishes
- Neutral-cure silicone on metal/wood interfaces.
- Re-apply after UV seasons (~2 years outdoors).
Weatherproofing is cheap insurance for expensive electronics.
