Weather Sealing for Smart Locks: Gaskets, Glands & Vents

Water is patient. You must be sneakier.

1) Door Interface

• Use a closed-cell EPDM gasket behind lock escutcheons.
• Avoid open-cell foam — it drinks humidity.
• Compress evenly; no warped mounting plates.

2) Cable Glands

• Pick IP67 rated nylon or metal glands with rubber inserts.
• Tighten until insert just bulges — not screams.

3) Drain & Vent

• Add a GORE-type membrane vent on battery or controller boxes.
• Drip loop every exterior cable run.

4) Sealants & Finishes

• Neutral-cure silicone on metal/wood interfaces.
• Re-apply after UV seasons (~2 years outdoors).
