Offline Access Routines & Fail-Safes: Codes, Keys, and Power Hygiene
No app. No cloud. Still reliable — if you keep clean habits.
1) Code Hygiene
- Rotate the main PIN quarterly; guest codes per trip/contractor visit.
- Disable beeps and "discoverable" modes; dim the backlight at night.
- Record codes in a sealed envelope in a separate, hidden location.
2) Mechanical Backup
- Keep the key cylinder maintained; test it quarterly.
- Store a spare key off-site or in a lockbox that isn't obvious from the door.
3) Power Hygiene
- Log install date for batteries; replace on schedule, not after failure.
- For solar systems: verify charge controller lights weekly; clear snow/shade.
- Test actuation in worst-case (cold morning or heat-soaked afternoon).
4) Communications Reality
- Turn off auto-unlock/proximity features; keep pairing list minimal.
- If you must use a keypad app, ensure it works completely offline.
5) Seasonal Entry Drill
- Approach, unlock by code, lock, repeat ×5 — listen for strain.
- Verify mechanical key unlock works smoothly.
- Update your door-cavity service card with date and findings.
Redundancy is boring — which is exactly why it works off-grid.
