Weather Sealing for Tiny-House Doors: Wood & Composite
Goal: dry electronics, quiet actuation—no swollen doors or sticky latches.
1) Gasket Discipline
- Use closed-cell EPDM or neoprene behind interior/exterior escutcheons (1–2 mm).
- Cut continuous perimeter—no gaps at corners; avoid wrinkles that channel water.
- Compression should be firm, not crushing. Uneven torque = leak paths.
2) Wood Seal & Edge Treatment
- After drilling, seal bore/crossbore edges with thin epoxy or varnish to prevent wicking.
- Paint exposed fibers. Unsealed edges drink humidity and warp the latch line.
3) Cable Pass-Throughs
- Use IP67 cable glands or rubber grommets + neutral-cure silicone.
- Add a drip loop before the entry point so water runs away, not in.
4) Vent, Don't Suffocate
- For enclosed cavities, add a breathable membrane vent (GORE-type) to equalize pressure.
- Over-sealing traps condensation; vents stop fogging and corrosion.
5) Composite Door Notes
- Back up thin skins with an HDPE or aluminum plate inside to spread load.
- Use low-tack painter's tape before drilling to avoid gel-coat chips.
Seal for rain, vent for life. Dry lock = reliable lock.
